David Raiklen is a composer-producer-host. He was mentored by Oscar winner John Williams and Pulitzer Prize winner Mel Powel. Dr. Raiklen studied at USC and CalArts and later taught at those universities. He has worked for Fox, Sony, Disney, Sprint, Mattel, Warner Bros and PBS, plus many independent producers. What You Want to Aim For: The First 30%

It’s really important to get to 30% as quickly as possible and ideally in the first 3 days! The reason that 30% is so important is that it tells the general public that there is momentum behind this project, that the people nearest to you are excited and trust you, and that there is a good chance this project will get funded!

1. Direct, Personalized Outreach!

Specifically, writing great crowdfunding emails. Read this terrific guide from Seed&Spark!

Historically speaking, 60-80% of people who will contribute to your campaign know you or know about the project already. How many people do you have a direct connection with who are interested in what you are doing and want to be a part of this!

2. Social Media!

Break down your social media and direct outreach through:

- 10-20 personal emails/day
- 10-20 tweets/day
- 2-5 Facebook posts/day

Engage with your supporters! Retweet them, like their posts, interact!

— *All of these posts CAN’T be about your project or the campaign. You need to create a social media plan that builds out the world of your story. Profile inspirations for making this project, history of the genre, etc.

— Follow a 5:1 ratio of posts. For every post that you talk about yourself or ask people to contribute something, you need to offer 5 cool things not about you.

3. Updates

Ideally 2 of these updates are going out every week.

IMAGE — Always include an image! We’re visual creatures.
TONE — Focus on the world of the story and what you can share, that’s good for both you and the audience.
MAKE IT EASY — Use easily shareable language and links for your followers to post! It’s gotta be simple for them to tell the world about your project.

***Regardless of your fundraising goal, we recommend having 30% of your goal pre-committed by people who promise to donate in the first 48-72 hours of the campaign launch.
