From the Heart Productions Names Student Grant Winner: Exploring the Cost of Brilliance and Compassion

Yun Heo’s SO EVER WARMLY is honored for its powerful exploration of legacy, identity, and the choices that shape how we live and love

From the Heart Productions , a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to supporting filmmakers with unique films that make a contribution to society, is proud to announce Yun Heo, an MFA student in Motion Pictures at the University of Miami, as the recipient of the 2025 Carole Dorothy Joyce Grant for Student Filmmakers.

Heo’s winning film, SO EVER WARMLY, is a short narrative drama that examines the emotional cost of ambition, the complexities of fatherhood, and the quiet power of compassion.

The story follows a struggling writer who journeys to the remote home of his estranged, dying father to retrieve a final manuscript—only to be drawn into a surreal confrontation with memory, identity, and legacy.

“Yun’s film stood out for its emotional depth and its willingness to ask difficult questions about success, responsibility, and love,” said Carole Dorothy Joyce, Vice President of From the Heart Productions. “SO EVER WARMLY reflects the kind of storytelling we believe in—honest, vulnerable, and meaningful. It’s exactly the kind of film that can stay with an audience long after the credits roll.”

In addition to a $3,000 cash prize, the grant winner will receive a suite of industry perks donated by passionate film-supporting companies and individuals, including:

  • 20% discount of Crowdfunding Campaign Setup, Management and Consulting from Jenny Waldo
  • 10% discount on Broker Fee with Debbie West from Movie Insure
  • 15% off expendables from Filmtools
  • And more in-kind support designed to help student filmmakers succeed
More About the Film

At its core, the film poses a profound question: Is it better to burn so brightly that you hurt those around you, or to burn more gently—with warmth—for others?

For the film’s father figure, Youngha, this question becomes a final confession. A once “successful” writer who pursued brilliance at all costs, he reflects on the emotional distance and pain left behind in his wake as a parent. Through this intimate and imaginative narrative, Heo explores the generational wounds and choices that shape who we become.

“As a Korean filmmaker studying in the United States, I see SO EVER WARMLY as a story about living between cultures and generations,” said Heo. “The tension between a parent’s expectations and one’s own path—between where you come from and where you are now—is something many people experience. While the film is rooted in my personal background, its central question is universal, and I hope it resonates with audiences both here and in Korea.”

About the Carole Dorothy Joyce Grant for Student Filmmakers

Since its founding in 1993, From the Heart Productions has supported independent filmmakers through the Roy W. Dean Grants—opportunities that have also welcomed student filmmakers.

Through her work consulting with applicants, Carole Joyce, Vice President of From the Heart Productions, recognized a consistent gap: a lack of meaningful funding opportunities specifically for students.

A graduate of Brooks Institute and an award-winning student filmmaker herself for the documentary Survivors, Carole understands firsthand the challenges young filmmakers face in bringing their stories to life. Inspired to create greater access, she established the Carole Dorothy Joyce Grant for Student Filmmakers to champion emerging voices and encourage films that are both passionate and socially meaningful.

Past recipients, including Degree of Certainty and From Earth to Earth, reflect the grant’s commitment to supporting student filmmakers whose work engages deeply with the human experience and contributes to a broader understanding of our world.
