Audra Kelly’s Roy W. Dean Spring Grant finalist spotlights fearless seniors defying expectations and proving that purpose does not expire with age
The Wisdom Years, a bold new series challenging conventional ideas about aging by spotlighting seniors who defy fear, expectation, and social norms, has been named the Britt Penrod Award winner for the Roy W. Dean Spring Grant.
Created by filmmaker and producer Audra Kelly, founder of Cowboy Sweetheart Films, and directed by Christopher Martini, the series presents older adults not as people fading from public life, but as active forces for courage, purpose, activism, and change.
The Britt Penrod Award honors a Roy W. Dean Grant finalist whose project is unique in vision and promises an exceptional contribution to society. Made possible through the generosity of Britt Penrod, a longtime friend and supporter of From the Heart Productions, the award provides $500 to support continued work on The Wisdom Years.

It is about courage in the present—and that is exactly the kind of distinctive, socially meaningful vision the Britt Penrod Award was created to recognize.”

When age meets audacity, The Wisdom Years reveals extraordinary seniors who prove that wisdom isn’t quiet—it’s fearless.
The high-concept series follows real older adults who refuse to disappear into the background. Gritty, emotional, and at times shocking, The Wisdom Years spotlights seniors who step into their truth, purpose, and power—challenging convention and taking action when others stand down.
Each episode features people breaking norms, confronting injustice, defying expectations, and creating change. In doing so, the series challenges pervasive beliefs that aging inevitably means decline, diminished value, or withdrawal from public life.
Instead, The Wisdom Years presents later life as a time when experience can become action, conviction can become courage, and wisdom can become a force for change.
At the heart of the project is a mission that extends beyond age. Cowboy Sweetheart Films’ guiding philosophy, “Breaking Through The Barriers,” is rooted in the belief that storytelling can help dissolve the walls that separate people from one another.
As Audra expressed in her statement about the project’s mission, “No matter what we believe, who we vote for, or where we come from—purpose does not expire with age and time moves all of us forward to the same horizon.”
That belief shapes a series intended not only to challenge ageism, but also to reveal the shared humanity connecting generations.

With decades of innovative leadership in entertainment, Audra Kelly has been a creative force across television, film, theater, radio, and fashion.
