Bill's blurb for the June specials page June 9, 2010 Trailer editing & consulting - with a special "From the Heart" discount If you've spent time on this amazing site or attended Carole Dean events you know that having a great trailer is critical to your project's success. Two years ago I opened my trailer editing and production service to help documentary filmmakers create better and more effective trailers. For example, strategic use of music is one of the hallmarks of good trailer cutting. While music adds color and feeling to a long-format piece, it literally drives a strong trailer. Your feature doc may have emotional moments, but trailers are basically 100% emotion from beginning to end. They exist in a visual and emotional reality quite distinct from narrative-format reality -although both are made from the same material and deal with the same issues. The emotional momentum (or "build") of a good trailer is of paramount importance. If you don't know how to construct it properly, your trailer will suffer. I developed my Trailer Clinic so filmmakers can see and understand what goes into good trailer editing. I want to equip them with the creative tools and techniques they can take back to their edit rooms and use to improve their trailer cuts. The Trailer Clinic is a hands-on workshop that takes place in my edit room in Los Angeles. It's an on-going, monthly event, limited to 5 people. During it, I discuss common trailer problems and their solutions. I explain the elements that make up good trailer editing by showing and comparing before & after edited versions of successful projects. I demonstrate effective trailer-style music cutting by taking specific sequences and showing why some music cues work and others don't. Each Clinic also includes a personal and detailed consultation of your existing trailer. Before the date, you can send a Quick Time video of your current trailer. I will evaluate it and make notes. During the Clinic I will offer approaches and practical suggestions that can make it better - and you'll receive a printout of the notes. The other filmmakers in the room will also add their comments and suggestions. Trailer Clinics are held on Saturdays from 10:00a to 6:00p. The day begins with a 4-hour presentation that covers the many trailer-making techniques and secrets I've learned during my long career. During the second part, we watch, examine and discuss the trailers you and the other filmmakers have submitted. I offer a 15% discount for "From The Heart" friends. For you, the $140 Trailer Clinic will cost only $119 ...or $45 if you don't bring a trailer to be examined and just want to learn how to make great trailers.
